Beer, Wine, and Liquor (Part One)

I wrote some thoughts about the Sunday Blue Law that was Indiana law at that time. Since then, it has been repealed, and Hoosiers can purchase booze on Sunday...between noon and 6pm. This had me thinking about what I like and dislike in the hazy realm of alcoholic beverages.

This is really good. Really--REALLY good!

Like many of my peers, I started off with beer. My late father loved his beer, though it was usually rather cheap. Some of my earliest memories of him was drinking Stroh's in the old steel cans. Over the years, his brand choices shifted: PBR, Miller, Red White and Blue, back to Miller. I would change things up for him when I was able by buying him some craft beer, or something imported. He seemed to favor Heineken, which surprised me. My default was Miller Draft for a time, until I discovered the wonder of Guinness stout, Newcastle Brown Ale, and Leinenkugel's. Of course, I ran into my share of "what is this?" and "why did I buy this?" brews. Malt liquor. There was this particular brew called "Mickey's Big Mouth", due to the bottles:

Hooboy, I've had a few lost weekends from this...

This, along with a "creme ale" called Little Kings, were cheap, got me plastered, and if memory serves me well, tasted better as you got more intoxicated. The one beer at the very bottom of my list is Budweiser. I have never been a fan of Bud. This is more like water that's trying to taste like beer, and failing.

Riesling. This is all Uncle Kage's fault!!

I really don't know much about wines, other than I don't care for red wines, or "dry" white wine. I lean more to the sweeter wines. Zinfandel was a favorite of mine, and there was this honey-infused white wine that I had to be very careful with, lest I forget myself and end up loaded. How Riesling came into my life is a story in and of itself.
In 2012, I sent a tweet to Uncle Kage, who is one of the elder statesmen of our Fandom, saying that I would enjoy sharing a glass of wine with him. His response was something like "That sounds great, but I don't think we'll both fit in the glass!" Upon arriving at the hotel and getting my stuff put away, I went downstairs to the bar/grill and found Uncle Kage, who insisted that I order a glass of Riesling, emphasizing "from the Mosel Valley". It was wonderful, and has been my go-to since.

Recently, I've gone back to liquor, and I will tackle that in the next blog.

  1. Neri, if you think Bud tastes like that, you should try Olympia or Coors. They make Bud taste a LOT more like real beer!

    1. Oddly, I didn't mind Coors. Then again, I only drank it after it was bought out by Molson. I prefer a beer without the hate. I've never had Olympia, and that may stay true for some time.
